Brazgel Named High School Coach Of The Week

Greg Brazgel of Lake Country Lutheran High School in Oconomowoc, Wis., has been named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday.

Greg Brazgel of Lake Country Lutheran High School in Oconomowoc, Wis., has been named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday.

Lake Country Lutheran has started the season 3-0 after defeating Dominican High School this past Friday in convincing fashion, 46-6. The Lightning defeated Beloit Turner, 26-7, in Week 1 and St. John's Military Academy, 16-12, in Week 2. They return to the field Friday evening against Brookfield Academy, a team they’ve shared the co-Midwest Classic Conference North championship with the past two seasons.

Brazgel, who is also the school’s math teacher, began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant at Lutheran West in Rocky River, Ohio. In 2001, Brazgel moved to Oconomowoc, where he was hired to start the Lake Country Lutheran football program and in 2003, after two seasons of playing junior varsity, the program dressed for its first-ever varsity season. The Lightning currently has 38 varsity players and has gone 19-5 in the past three seasons, including its first playoff victory a year ago.

“Our program is built based on the idea that nobody cares if they get any individual attention, as long as our team is successful,” said Brazgel. “We try to elevate each other by the way we play as one united group.”

His assistant coaching staff includes Mark Herdt, Estevan Lara, and Erik Malm.

A native of Milwaukee, Brazgel played football at Milwaukee Lutheran High School under head coach Keith Kalous. He attended Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, where he played safety for head coach Jeff Gabrielson.

Brazgel and his wife, Nicole, have one daughter, Katie, and two sons, William and Nathan.

The Packers will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their 'Coach of the Week' winner during the 20010 high school football season. Winners are awarded several items and privileges, including a $1,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on packers.com.

Nominations for Coach of the Week should be submitted by 9 a.m. every Monday to Tim Schroeder, youth football coordinator, at coachoftheweek@packers.com (e-mail) or by fax at (920) 569-7302. Please include the nominee's name, address, school, phone number, and reason he/she is deserving of the award.
