John Post of Bloomer High School has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday. Post is the first recipient of the award in 2010.
Through the first two games of the 2010 season, Post’s Blackhawks have soared out to a 2-0 record. Their second victory of the season was against Somerset, 20-19, a team that ended its season in the second round of the 2009 Division 4 state playoffs.
“They have a very good program,” Post said of Somerset. “Our team is young, we lost 32 seniors from last year and we were a little worried about our composure. We put together a long scoring drive and at that point we realized we could move the ball, and we also knew we could stop them.”
Post, who is also the school’s biology teacher, began his coaching career in 1991 as an assistant while he was student teaching at Chippewa Falls, Wis. In 1992, Post moved to Chillicothe, Ill., where he taught and coached football at Illinois Valley Central High School. In 2000, Post moved back to Wisconsin and accepted an assistant coaching position at Bloomer. After three seasons as an assistant, he was promoted to head coach of the varsity program.
His assistant coaching staff includes assistants Glen Steffen, Keith Poirier, AJ Gehrmann, Steve Krueger, Nick Schumacher, and Austin Herrick.
A native of Chippewa Falls, Post attended Cadott High School where he played football, basketball, and participated on the track and field team. He is a 1991 graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Clare, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and coaching. Post recently received his master’s degree in administration in 2008 from UW – Superior.
Post and his wife, Nancy, have two daughters, Grace and Alexa, and a son, Mitch.
