I love Lacy and what having a solid back can do for a team with our passing abilities. Can you compare Lacy to the other top backs from his draft class? Surely, he was the best available that year. Am I wrong?

Eddie “I love Lacy” Lacy and Le’Veon Bell were home run picks in the second round. They’re both big, powerful running backs.

Casey from Menasha, WI

Vic, a while back you mentioned how fans tend to feel that other teams are there simply to get beat by us. I’ve only been watching the game for a few years now, but I notice myself falling into that trend. Any advice on how to become a fan of the game over a fan of the team?

Study the league. Follow the full football cycle, from the Senior Bowl to the combine, owners meetings, free agency, draft and beyond.

Games like the one this weekend forge the steel we need to become to win another Super Bowl. I can’t wait.

I completely agree. A late-season matchup on the road against a defensive-minded opponent will test the Packers’ mettle. The Bills have a Seattle-like quality to them. They are aggressive on defense. They get after the quarterback and trust their secondary to buy time for the rush to get home. This game has flavor.

Jon from Warsaw, Poland

Vic, as a long-time Packers fan, I believe our angst comes from our vivid memories of the past 45-plus years. We lived through the mediocrity of the ’70s and ’80s. Wolf and Holmgren brought us one Super Bowl victory, then a loss, and then Holmgren departed for Seattle and took his staff with him. Since then we’ve had many years of being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. We’ve been lucky enough to get another Super Bowl victory, but also many early eliminations. We also know what would happen if we lost Rodgers; back to mediocrity. We are Titletown; we need more titles.

You make being a Packers fans sound like crossing the desert. Hey, it hasn’t been that bad.

Rod from Marysville, MI

Do you honestly think the Packers are good enough defensively to win the Super Bowl? Do you really think the offense can carry the defense through the playoffs? How long is the window of opportunity open? Do you think sarcasm is a good tactic to use on passionate, concerned, lifelong Packers fans?

Yes, yes, at least five more years, yes.

Ryan from Colorado Springs, CO

Vic, I was just taking a look at the Pro Bowl leaders and Green Bay has 17 players that are in position to make the Pro Bowl. What does that tell you about the team and/or the players?

The Packers have a large fan base that views the Pro Bowl as a popularity contest, which it largely has become. Hey, it’s a marketing tool; let’s be honest about it.

This is obviously related to Gary Andersen’s decision to leave Wisconsin without notice and just a few months after signing a new contract with the Badgers. Do you see the NCAA ever imposing a rule similar to what you see in the NFL that restricts when coaches are allowed to interview for vacancies? It seems the biggest loser when it comes to a sudden coach departure at the college level are the kids on the team.

The NCAA is powerless to do anything. The big five conferences are in control and until they act as one body instead of five individual bodies, major college football will continue to decline. Recently I wrote that the eastern half of the Big Ten was going to seize control of the conference. I have a feeling Coach Andersen agrees.

If you could get any NFL team to return to their throwback logos/uniforms, who would it be? I’d like to see the Patriots go back to the Revolutionary War soldier snapping a football. Their current logo has that guy with a weird elongated head. What even is that thing?

It’s a contemporary Revolutionary War soldier. I like the old uniforms better, too. One of the best logos from the AFL years appears to be gone forever. I’m talking about the Oilers’ oil derrick.

Lance from Eau Claire, WI

Vic, I’m worried that the performance by the defense last week was a sign of things to come. The past couple of years the defense has not been able to stop teams in the playoffs and the Packers have been one and done. Do you see the defense bouncing back from this?

Yes. Never has one half of football traumatized a fan base as the second half of Monday night’s game has traumatized Packers fans. It’s Friday and we still haven’t moved on.

Trent from Fort Wayne, IN

I was getting my haircut in Cleveland back in 2001. During my sit I noticed a picture of the barber and a person I thought was Glenn Campbell. When I inquired, he said it was Bradshaw. Apparently, he was once his wig guy. Did Terry wear his hair piece very often?

He had a contract with a wig company and it required him to wear his hairpiece when he was on camera. If the print guys were doing an interview at Bradshaw’s locker and a TV guy walked up, Bradshaw would reach back into his locker and put his toupee on. He wore it like a hat. After a while, he gave up on the endorsement.

Gary from Marshalltown, IA

Vic, you started banning people again for one or two columns and then stopped. Is that your version of fire everyone?

You’re banned.

Tanner from Chicago, IL

Vic, I love your work and appreciate your dismissal of the fire-everyone speak. I agree the Bills defense is worthy of attention, but the Peyton Manning performance does not get my attention. His ball is really fluttering these days, arm strength clearly waning. Have you noticed the decline in his game recently? This will only get magnified in the playoffs, knowing how he struggles in those situations. I think we are witnessing the end of an era. Aaron is finally at his rightful place in the QB hierarchy.

This comes as a great surprise to me. I predicted in the preseason that Manning would have his best year.

Bridget from Milwaukee, WI

You are a sportswriter, not a football fan in the same sense as your readers. What are you a fan of?

Oh, the silent majesty of a winter’s morn, the clean, cool chill of the holiday air, and a (bleep) in his bathrobe emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer.

Randy from Aurora, CO

With Buffalo’s strong pass rush, do you see the Packers using more screens, draws and short passes to cool the Bills’ jets?

Yes.

Karl from Santa Fe, NM

Can you believe FOX putting so much of their national TV coverage into the Bengals/Browns game, where I believe the Bills/Packers game to be a far more competitive game?

It’s all about ratings and the casual fan, and the casual fan wants to see Johnny Football.
