GREEN BAY — Packers defensive lineman Mike Daniels was named the state’s professional athlete of the year at the fifth annual Wisconsin Sports Awards on Tuesday night in Sheboygan Falls.
Daniels was one of four Packers nominated for the award, along with QB Aaron Rodgers, LB Clay Matthews and G Josh Sitton. Milwaukee Bucks star Khris Middleton was the only other nominee. The award is voted on by a panel of media members in Wisconsin.
Daniels led the Packers defensive line in both tackles (66) and sacks (four) in 2015. He also had his first career interception, and he signed a multi-year contract extension before the season ended.
Since coming to the Packers as a fourth-round draft pick out of Iowa in 2012, Daniels has steadily developed into a respected defensive leader on the team and late last season he spoke of being an even more influential leader after signing his new contract.
