“Through the Lens” will appear once per week during the offseason. Packers team photographer Evan Siegle deconstructs some of his favorite images from the 2017 season. Each week will offer a new photo gallery of some of his best photos from the past season.

Boys of summer

For a day in June I switched from covering the players on the football field to the baseball diamond. That event was the Jordy Nelson Charity Softball Game at Fox Cities Stadium near Appleton. The day was filled with photo-worthy moments, like Damarious Randall reclaiming his home run derby title and Jake Ryan getting doused with water by Nelson and Aaron Rodgers. Visually though, I think my favorite image from the game was this photo of Richard Rodgers as he waited to bat. I like the composition/framing and mood in the image. I must say it was kind of weird seeing a bat in his hands rather than a football. This image was shot with a 35mm lens (ISO = 100, Aperture = f2, Shutter = 1/2500th)

The man behind the camera

You’d be surprised on how many players own a camera or have an interest in photography – Ryan, Randall Cobb and Brett Hundley just to name a few. It’s always cool when I can share insight or talk shop with them, too. After the first day of training camp, Hundley grabbed one of my cameras and started photographing his teammates. I was pretty impressed because Brett held the camera the right way (one hand holding the camera body and the other hand placed beneath the lens). He understood the focus set-up that I shoot with, too – thumb pushes the AF-ON button (located on back of camera to activate focusing) while the index finger trips the shutter (located on top of the camera body). He managed to get some awesome shots! Check out the contact sheet…it shows some of Brett’s photos and a couple images I took of Brett as he photographed his teammates. This image of Aaron Rodgers, taken by Hundley, was shot with an 85mm lens (ISO = 100, Aperture = f2, Shutter = 1/2500th)

Intensity

Any time I need a game-face type image I look for Packers defensive tackle Mike Daniels. The guy is all business every time he steps onto the field. Before the game I can usually find him staring down the opponent. I captured this image of Daniels as he lined up for the national anthem before a mid-November game against the Baltimore Ravens. I really like the saturation of colors (from the stands and the throwback uniforms) in this image. This image was shot with a 135mm lens (ISO = 100, Aperture = f2, Shutter = 1/2500th)
